The story of orphaned Heidi living in the mountain pastures of the Swiss alps (the Alm) with her grandfather (known to local villagers as the Alm-Uncle) and his goats – the most popular piece of Swiss literature over the past 140 years, it has sold hundreds of millions of copies, been translated into more than 50 languages, and been made into 12 films! The Alm-Uncle has been shunned by society (following a dissolute period in his youth – drinking too much, chasing girls…) and is deeply embittered about the world and has lost his faith in God. As Heidi grows up she helps the Alm-Uncle reconcile with God and the local villagers – and Heidi and her grandfather both help in the healing of the wheelchair-bound Clara. The book has religious themes running through it. While I am not religious (I was not “given” a religion when I was growing up – another of the 100 books Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret is interesting on this point), neither am I anti-religious. People sometimes say that they are not religious but they are “spiritual” and I have sometimes wondered what they mean. Heidi perhaps provides one way of thinking about the crossover of religious and spiritual life. This book is the inspiration for The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett – another of the 100 books.

I think this book is very interesting and is full of magical adventures. Heidi has lots of friends in the country. Then she makes a friend called Clara but her other friend is angry and jealous and throws her wheelchair down the mountain.

Heidi ,a young girl , goes to stay with her grandad who lives in the mountains. Her grandad makes cheese as a job but sits grumpily in his hut for most of the rest of the time. As Heidi lives with him longer his heart changes for the better.

Heidi is adventurous and wonderful book and I loved it when my Mum read it. It’s about a young girl that keeps moving houses and about the people she meets. It is based in the country (the Swiss Alps) and the city. The best bit of the book is when she meets Clara and the Goat General (Peter). The Grandfather when she fits meets him is a very unpleasant man then when they get to know each other he is very nice. It is one of my favourite books.
