My Family and other Animals
Gerald Durrell

Genre:
Animals and nature

About a crazy family who move to Corfu. Gerry the youngest in the family is obsessed with animals and collects countless creatures. I like this book because the family make lots of mistakes and it is very funny. Larry the oldest brother is super funny and unreasonable. He thinks he is always right when he is actually wrong.

I rate this book five stars because I love the antics the family get up to. My favourite character is Larry because he is unreasonable but funny. He all ways presumes he will be amazing at something even if he hasn’t tried it yet. I also enjoy to read about all his pets and all the things they do.

This is a (mostly) true story about a young boy who moves to Corfu, Greece and has a fascination with animals. The book is split into three sections according to the houses they live in. It has a vast array of spectacular creatures, deeply described characters and puzzling dilemmas. It’s a real, laugh-out-loud book (like when Larry finds scorpions in his matchbox), filled with energy and detailed description.

When the family moves to Corfu Gerald writes a book to describe all the animals he discovers with his friend Theodore.

I absolutely adore this book. Gerald Durrell is so lucky to have a little pet tortoise, frog, bat and lots more. I cried at the end of the book when they had to go back to London because of the war. Why couldn’t they have stayed. Larry made me die of laughter when Gerald’s scorpion came out of his match box. Over all this is one of the best books i have ever read.

Larry the oldest brother is super funny and unreasonable. He thinks he is always right when he is actually wrong.

Delightful comic masterpiece about the author’s five childhood years on the Greek island of Corfu (he moved to Corfu aged 10). The stories about his family (easy going and disorganised mother; a faintly ridiculous brother and another mad about guns; and an over-wrought and body-conscious sister), and all their friends and acquaintances on the island (the great Sprio, the grim and hypochondriac Lugaretzia, the scholarly and wryly comic Theodore, a motley collection of eccentric tutors for Gerald), and the family dogs (Roger, Widdle and Puke), are wonderful and hilarious. The family anecdotes are told between lyrical descriptions of the island and its flora and fauna. If you find some of the descriptive writing hard going, shut your eyes and try to imagine this beautiful place. The detailed descriptions of all the the beatles, frogs, toads, geckos and other local wildlife are brilliant (look out for the epic battle between his gecko Geronimo and an invading Mantis) – the author went on to become an important naturalist and conservationist. Durrell said himself about his time on Corfu that “My childhood in Corfu shaped my life. If I had the craft of Merlin, I would give every child the gift of my childhood.”

I loved this book because of all the funny incidents with the animals and because of the wonderful way everything was described. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes animals.
