This is a fantastic series about a family (John, Susan, Roger and Tittie a.k.a. the Swallows) who go head to head with the Amazons (Nancy and Peggy) for ownership of Wild Cat Island. This is but the first of many (twelve) stunning adventures. My favourite of the series is Missee Lee in which the characters embark on a journey to China but are caught in a storm. During the tempest they are separated and wash up on different islands.

Swallows and Amazons is a great book about adventure and exploring. This book is a awesome story great for reading to the whole family. The story is about a family from London who go to there aunts and uncles house in the country side and find a island but later they find out that they aren’t the only ones there.

This book is one of my childhood memories. My grandmother had a dark olive green copy of the book which she’d read to my mother (nearly 70 years ago now) and which my mother read to me (nearly 40 years ago). Swallows and Amazons is set in the Lake District of England – one side of my family is Swedish, which is a country filled with lakes, and I have played at Swallows and Amazons with my kids on the Swedish lakes. We only had a canoe (not a yacht) but we made a camp on an island (which we called Fågel Ön – ‘Bird Island’ in Swedish (because lots of birds would nest on it over winter)), and had picnics there, and built fires, and swam off the island, and fished (but never caught anything – we didn’t know what we were doing!), and discovered pirate and native boats hidden in the reeds around the edge of the lake (and perhaps we should have captured them…) Before you read Swallows and Amazons, you should read Treasure Island, another of the 100 books, and learn a bit about pirates. The author, Arthur Ransome, wrote a book about the author of Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson, many years before he wrote Swallows and Amazons. Last but not least, I agree with all the comments on this book: the war between the Swallows and the Amazons is great!

I enjoyed reading this book because its has adventurous (I especially like the bit with the Amazons when stealing each other’s boats and flats) and the bit I like most is the ending with the robbers….

I am reading this book and I like it because it tells you about ships and it has puzzles at the end and a map of where they go. It has action, adventure and comedy so I really like it, I find it as a oscar winning book so I highly recommend it.

beware one of characters names now means a innapropiate word now so I would give it to a sensible year 5.

  8. lshaw says:

I think that this is a good book because of the adventure the children go on this book inspired me to go out into nature more and be more adventures.

  9. fpatten says:

I thought this was a great book and my favourite part was definitely the chase [ the war between the swallows and amazons ] because it was the most action packed part.

I really enjoyed reading this book because I really like the characters and the plot (especially the Amazons) though I didn’t enjoy the beginning quite as much because nothing happened.

When my mum bought this from the bookshop, I didn’t look forward to reading it. But when I actually read it, I read nothing else for six months, it was so good! My favourite part is the war between the Swallows and Amazons.
